About Humboldt Forum

The Humboldt Forum occupies the Berliner Schloss, the former royal palace of Berlin, on Schlossplatz square, opposite the Museumsinsel. The original palace, home to the Prussian kings and German emperors, was heavily damaged in World War II and demolished in 1950 by the East German government, which built the Palácio da República in its place. After reunification, that building was demolished and the palace was reconstructed, with three Baroque facades rebuilt and a modern wing facing the river Spree.

The name honors the brothers Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt, the travelling naturalist and the scholar of language and education. The cultural center houses the Museu Etnológico and the Museu de Arte Asiática, with objects from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania, such as boats from the South Seas, sculptures and temple pieces.

Also there is the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition, about Berlin's connections with the world, organized by the city museum. The institution openly addresses the colonial origins of part of the collection, a topic present in the exhibitions.

On the ground floor are the Schlüterhof courtyard, surrounded by the Baroque facades, the covered passage that crosses the building and spaces with remains of the foundations of the old palace. It is a good stop between the Museumsinsel, the Catedral de Berlim and Alexanderplatz.
