About Gemäldegalerie
The Gemäldegalerie, Galeria de Pinturas, is one of the major museums of old master art in Europe. It is part of the Museus Estatais de Berlim and is located in the Kulturforum, a group of cultural buildings near Potsdamer Platz, next to the Filarmônica de Berlim. The collection opened to the public in 1830; divided during the Cold War between the two sides of the city, it was reunited in the current building, inaugurated in 1998.
Around 1,400 works are on display, from medieval painting to the 18th century. Highlights include "O Amor Vitorioso" by Caravaggio; "Moça com Colar de Pérolas" by Vermeer; "Provérbios Holandeses" by Pieter Bruegel, o Velho, showing about a hundred popular sayings; portraits by Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein; and works by Botticelli, Titian, Raphael, Rubens and Jan van Eyck.
The Gemäldegalerie has one of the largest Rembrandt collections in the world. The famous "Homem com Elmo Dourado", long attributed to him, is now considered the work of someone from his circle, and the museum tells that story.
The rooms are lit by natural light from the ceiling and are arranged around a large central hall with a water installation by the artist Walter De Maria. The route is long, but the space is usually calm, away from the queues of the busiest museums.
