About Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe commemorates the roughly six million Jews murdered during the Nazi regime. The project was designed by American architect Peter Eisenman. It was inaugurated in May 2005 on a 19,000-square-meter site in central Berlin, south of the Brandenburger Tor.

The work consists of 2,711 gray concrete slabs, the stelae, of varying heights, on undulating ground. The corridors between them are narrow, and once inside you lose reference to the surrounding streets. The memorial bears no names or inscriptions on its surface and can be visited at any time.

Beneath the field of stelae is the Ort der Information, the information center. The rooms tell stories of families and people who were murdered, display letters and diaries, and list victims' names. Admission is free, there is security control, and the center has closing days: check before you go.

It is a place of remembrance. Please show respect: walk in silence, do not climb or jump between the blocks, do not sit down to eat, and avoid posed photos.
