About Berliner Dom

The Berliner Dom was built between 1894 and 1905 by order of Emperor Wilhelm II, to a design by Julius Raschdorff, in a neo-Renaissance style. It stands beside the Lustgarten, on the same Ilha dos Museus. It is the largest Protestant church in Germany and one of the most important dynastic burial sites in Europe.

The church was heavily damaged in 1944 during World War II. The exterior was rebuilt in a simplified form, and the interior was only finished in 2002, restored to its original appearance. The main nave features mosaics, the large dome and a monumental organ used for concerts.

In the crypt, the Hohenzollerngruft, lie the sarcophagi of nearly a hundred members of the family that ruled Prussia and the German Empire. A staircase of 270 steps leads to the external gallery of the dome, with views over the Ilha dos Museus, the Spree and the television tower.

Admission is charged for tourists and includes the crypt, the church museum and the dome. During services, concerts and ceremonies visits are restricted: check before you go.
