About Dokumentation Obersalzberg
The Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a place of learning and remembrance about the Nazi dictatorship, opened in 1999 on the Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden. It occupies the area where, from 1933, the regime expelled residents and established a restricted zone around the Berghof, Hitler's house, which became the regime's second center of power after Berlin.
The permanent exhibition, Idyll und Verbrechen (Idyll and Crime), links the site's history to the history of Nazism as a whole: the persecution, the war and the genocide decided there as well. Part of the bunker system built at the end of the war is included in the route. The content is organized by the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich and Berlin.
The building has been expanded, and the current exhibition follows the timeline of the regime, from the Obersalzberg to the war. It is a place of remembrance: visit in silence, without posed photos, and allow time to read.
