About Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe stands next to Plaza 18 de Julio in the centre of Canelones. It is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe because that was the settlement's name: Villa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, officially founded in 1783.
The first church on the site dates from 1775. Father Juan Miguel de la Laguna, considered the founder of the village, received permission to build the parish church. The current building was erected in 1843 and was later enlarged.
Inside, one of the highlights is the mechanical organ from 1900, restored in 1989. Since 1961 the church has been the seat of the Diocese de Canelones, and in 2020 it was declared Santuário Nacional de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The temple is also a Monumento Histórico Nacional.
Being on the same block as the plaza and the Monumento a la Bandera, the visit is quick and fits well at the start or end of a winery day.
