About Estación de Cría de Fauna Autóctona

The station began operating in 1980 on the eastern slope of Cerro Pan de Azúcar, through an initiative of the Intendencia de Maldonado and naturalist Tabaré González Sierra. Its focus is the captive breeding of threatened native species.

The area includes about 50 species and some 250 animals, among them the world's largest population of veado-campeiro, the pampas deer.

Visitors follow trails: the Sendero de Fauna, with the animal enclosures; the Sendero Nativo; the Mico Sendero; the Sendero Histórico Patrimonial; and a playground with an interpretation center.

The reserve is also the starting point for the climb to Cerro Pan de Azúcar, and is about 1.5 km from Castillo de Piria.
