About Castillo de Piria
The castle was the home of Francisco Piria, the entrepreneur who founded Piriápolis. Construction began in 1894 and it was inaugurated on August 17, 1897, based on a design by engineer Aquiles Monzani, in a mix of Renaissance and medieval styles reminiscent of late-19th-century Italian villas.
The building has brick walls with battlements, two floors and a basement. It is surrounded by gardens, about 5 km from the beaches, near Cerro Pan de Azúcar.
The Intendencia de Maldonado bought the castle in 1980, and today it operates as a municipal museum with guided tours. The upper-floor rooms can only be seen with a guide.
The poet Julio Herrera y Reissig lived there for a time, and the castle is a key piece for understanding the city plan Piria imagined.
