About Laguna José Ignacio
Laguna José Ignacio lies west of the village and appears beside Ruta 10 for those arriving from Punta del Este. It is a coastal lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbar.
The lagoon is part of a lacustrine national park created in 1977 that also includes the Garzón and de Rocha lagoons. The shores attract waterbirds, and birdwatching is one of the most common activities.
With calm water and steady wind, it is one of the region's most used spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Families often use the shores for picnics and swimming in gentle waters.
For visitors coming from Punta del Este, the lagoon is the first landscape of José Ignacio: the water mirror appears beside Ruta 10 a few kilometers before the village.
