About Faro de José Ignacio
The lighthouse was first lit in 1877 on the most prominent, rocky point of the José Ignacio peninsula to reduce the frequent shipwrecks in the area. In 1873, for example, the British ship Norman had sunk nearby. In 1907 the operation was transferred to the state, and since 1983 the light has been automatic.
The tower is 25 meters tall, and the light sits 32.5 meters above sea level. It is operated by the Armada Nacional and was declared a National Historic Monument in 1970. Inside, about 150 steps lead to the top.
The lighthouse is the center of the village. On one side is Playa Mansa, to the west, sheltered by the peninsula and where the fishing boats are moored. On the other, to the east, is Playa Brava, wider and with strong waves, popular with surfers, which continues along the coast toward Laguna Garzón.
Around it, the rocks of the point serve as a viewpoint over the open sea. Between July and October southern right whales often pass along this coast, and the point has an open view to the ocean.
