About Portón de Campo
The Portón de Campo is the gate of the old wall that closed Colônia do Sacramento on the landward side. It was built by the Portuguese in 1745 and was part of the Citadel.
In front of the gate there is a wooden drawbridge over the old moat, and sections of the stone wall survive on the sides. The fortifications were demolished more than once, and the current ensemble was rebuilt using some original stones.
Passing through the gate is the classic way to enter the Barrio Histórico. Shortly after begin the cobbled streets that lead to the Plaza Mayor 25 de Mayo, the Calle de los Suspiros and the Faro.
The site is also known as Puerta de la Ciudadela. It is part of the ensemble declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
