About Museo de Colonia

The Museo de Colonia is not in a single building: it occupies several historic houses in the Barrio Histórico, each with its own theme. A single ticket covers the spaces, and opening days alternate among them.

The Espacio Dr. Bautista Rebuffo, at Calle del Comercio 77, was the first to open, in 1951, in a Portuguese building from the early 18th century that has been a residence, a hospital and a tenement. The exhibition covers the region from prehistory to the present, and this is where tickets are sold. Next door, at number 67, the Vivienda Portuguesa, known as Casa de Nacarello, appears on plans from 1732 and recreates the interior of an 18th-century Portuguese house.

On the Plaza Mayor is the Espacio Portugués, about the city's Portuguese period. The Espacio Español, on Calle de San José, occupies two 18th-century houses and deals with everyday life in the Spanish town. The Espacio Indígena, on Avenida General Flores, addresses the first peoples of the department's coast, and the Archivo Regional holds colonial documents.

The spaces are small and quick to visit, which makes it easy to include them in a walking tour of the neighborhood.
