About Polybahn
The Polybahn links Central, the square by the river about a 5-minute walk from Zürich HB, to the Polyterrasse atop the right bank. It has operated since 1889, when it opened to take students up to the polytechnic.
The route is 176 meters long and overcomes 41 meters of elevation in about 100 seconds. The red cars depart every few minutes, and Zurich’s regular public transport ticket is valid for the ride.
The Polyterrasse sits in front of the ETH main building, the Federal Institute of Technology, designed by Gottfried Semper and built between 1858 and 1864. Albert Einstein studied at ETH, which has more than 20 Nobel laureates associated with its history.
From the terrace, open to the public, you can see the old town roofs, church towers, the Limmat, the lake and, on clear days, the Alps. Next to it is the main building of the University of Zurich.
