About Trümmelbachfälle
The Trümmelbachfälle are ten waterfalls that run inside the rock, through a narrow gorge carved by the river itself. They carry the meltwater from a basin of about 24 km² on the slopes of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, half of it covered by snow and ice.
At the thaw, up to 20,000 litres per second can pass through the gorge with a roar. The water carries stones and sand, which continue to erode the rock.
The falls were opened to visitors in 1877. A tunnel lift rises inside the mountain, and stairs, galleries and illuminated walkways lead from one fall to another. The site is included in Switzerland's federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments.
The falls are usually open from April to November. Children under 4 years and dogs are not allowed.
