Höhematte
Lawn in the center of Interlaken, between the Höheweg and the historic hotels, protected from development since 1864. It has views of the Jungfrau and is a landing spot for paragliders.

About Höhematte
The Höhematte is the large lawn in the middle of Interlaken, between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost stations. In 1864 a cooperative bought the land, which had been state property and a site for assemblies and trials, and since then no buildings have been allowed there.
Because of this, the view to the south remains open: on a clear day the Jungfrau appears white in the background, framed by the nearer mountains. Panels around the lawn identify the peaks and tell the story of the hotels on the street.
To the north runs the Höheweg, the avenue of 19th-century hotels, shops and sidewalks with tables. Horse-drawn carriages and rental bikes depart from there. In the sky it’s common to see paragliders, which do tandem flights from the slopes and land on the lawn itself.
The Höheweg hosts events throughout the year, such as the start of the Jungfrau Marathon and an open-air concert on January 1.

How much time to set aside
From 30 minutes to an hour, walking between the two stations.
Best time
Early morning light usually favors the view of the Jungfrau, before clouds rise. In the late afternoon paragliders land more frequently during the European summer, from June to August.
How to get there
It lies between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost, about a 10-minute walk from each station. Local buses stop along the Höheweg.
Tip
To photograph the Jungfrau without people in front, go to the side of the lawn opposite the Höheweg. If you want to paraglide, book with one of the local schools and arrange the flight according to the day's wind.
