About Brienzer Rothorn
The Brienzer Rothorn, at 2,350 m, lies on the border between the cantons of Bern, Lucerne and Obwalden, above Brienz. The Brienz Rothorn Bahn, opened in 1892, climbs 7.6 km in about an hour to Rothorn Kulm station at 2,244 m, just below the summit.
The line is not electrified, and almost all regular trains are hauled by steam locomotives, with red carriages. At the intermediate station Planalp the locomotive stops to take on water.
From the upper station the summit is a little higher, with the Brienzersee down below and, to the south, the Bernese Alps.
The train runs only in summer: the full season usually goes from June to October, with sections to Planalp from May; check the timetable before heading up to the top station.
