About Kleine Scheidegg

Kleine Scheidegg is a pass at 2,061 m between the Eiger and the Lauberhorn, the divide between the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen valleys. The Wengernalpbahn, a rack railway opened in 1893, reaches it from both sides, and the Jungfraubahn starts there, heading to the Jungfraujoch.

From the pass, the Eiger's north face towers above, and the Mönch and Jungfrau, which are not visible from Grindelwald, appear in full. Since the 1930s the place has served as a base for north face climbs.

There is a hotel and restaurants by the station. The Männlichen panoramic trail ends there, and the Eiger Trail, which runs at the foot of the north face, starts at Eigergletscher station, about 10 minutes by train, and descends to Alpiglen in about two hours.

In winter the pass lies in the middle of the ski area. Trains run year-round, but the weather changes quickly; check operations before going up.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

From one to three hours, with a short walk or the Eiger Trail.

Best time

July to September for the Eiger Trail, which is usually snow-free in that period. Make the stop on the way back from the Jungfraujoch to get used to the altitude.

How to get there

Wengernalpbahn train from Grindelwald or from Lauterbrunnen, passing through Wengen. From Interlaken Ost, about 1 h 15 min.

Tip

On the return from the Jungfraujoch, descend through a different valley than the one you ascended: for example, go up via Grindelwald and down via Wengen and Lauterbrunnen. Bring a jacket because it's windy at the pass.
