About Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is the snowy saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau. The Jungfraubahn has reached it since 1912, after 16 years of construction, via a tunnel bored through the Eiger and the Mönch from Kleine Scheidegg. The station sits at 3,454 m.

From Grindelwald, the shortest route is the Eiger Express, a gondola that goes from the Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher station in about 15 minutes; from there the train continues inside the mountain, stopping at the Eismeer window. The other route goes via Lauterbrunnen or via Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg, taking about two hours from Interlaken Ost.

At the top, an elevator rises 108 m in about 25 seconds to the Sphinx terrace, at 3,571 m, above the Aletsch Glacier, which is 22 km long and part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The Ice Palace has corridors and sculptures carved into the glacier since the 1930s, and the Plateau is an open platform over the snow. The Alpine Sensation, a 250 m gallery, tells the story of the railway's construction.

The Jungfraujoch is open year-round, but the weather changes quickly and clouds can obscure everything; check operating status before going up. The air is thin: walk slowly and drink water.
