About National Football Museum
The Museu Nacional do Futebol is in Manchester, in the Urbis, a wedge-shaped glass building in Cathedral Gardens built in 2002. The museum moved from Preston to Manchester in 2012 and tells the story of football, whose modern rules were set in England in 1863 with the founding of the country's football association.
The collection is one of the largest in the sport worldwide: the ball from the 1966 World Cup final won by England at Wembley, historic shirts from English and international players, trophies, tickets, posters, boots and items from the women's game, which has its own gallery. The Hall of Fame honours players, managers and coaches.
The museum also features interactive activities, such as goal shots measured by sensors and passing games, usually paid separately, and temporary exhibitions on topics like supporters, art and street football. The content treats the sport as a whole, without focusing on a single club.
Admission is usually charged, with a ticket valid for a period; check conditions on the website. The Cathedral Gardens opposite are an open lawn between the cathedral and the Urbis.
