About The Beatles Story

The Beatles Story is a museum dedicated to the Beatles in the basement of one of the warehouses at the Royal Albert Dock. Opened in 1990, it tells the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the four lads from Liverpool who formed the best‑known band in rock history, from Lennon and McCartney's meeting at a church fête in Woolton in 1957 to the breakup in 1970 and their solo careers.

The route, with an audio guide in several languages including Portuguese, passes through reconstructed sets: the Hamburg venue where the band played at the start, a replica of the Cavern Club, the Abbey Road studio, a yellow submarine and a white room dedicated to Lennon's Imagine. There are original instruments, clothing, letters, records and photos, including Lennon's round glasses.

The museum also has rooms about Brian Epstein, the manager, and about Liverpool's 1960s music scene, known as Merseybeat. The shop sells records and souvenirs.

Other Beatles-related places are scattered around the city: Mathew Street with the Cavern Club; the childhood homes of Lennon and McCartney, run by the National Trust, visitable by reservation; the gates of Strawberry Field; and Penny Lane. Themed bus tours, such as the Magical Mystery Tour, visit these sites.
