About St George's Hall
St George's Hall is a neoclassical building opposite Liverpool Lime Street station, regarded as one of the finest examples of the style in Europe. It was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, who won the competition at age 23 and died before it was completed, and opened in 1854 when Liverpool was one of the wealthiest cities in the empire. It houses a concert hall and courts under the same roof, with stone colonnades that resemble a Roman temple.
The Grand Hall has a barrel vault, red granite columns, statues, a huge organ and a floor with over 30,000 Minton tiles, which is kept covered to protect it and is shown to the public only on certain occasions. At the rear, the small circular concert room with decorated galleries is used for events. The Victorian courts, with cells in the basement, can be visited and tell stories of trials.
The building has been restored and today hosts events, concerts and fairs, such as the Christmas market in the square outside. Around it is the cultural quarter of William Brown Street, with the World Museum, the Walker Art Gallery and the Central Library, all offering access to their permanent collections free of charge; check ahead.
St George's Hall is usually open for visits part of the week, with hours that vary according to events; check before you go.
