About Royal Albert Dock

The Royal Albert Dock is a complex of docks and warehouses on Liverpool's waterfront, beside the River Mersey. It was designed by engineer Jesse Hartley and opened in 1846 by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. It was the first warehouse system in Great Britain built only of brick, stone and cast iron, with no structural timber, to resist fires, and it allowed ships to be unloaded straight into the buildings, protected from theft.

With the decline of the port, the docks closed in 1972 and were left abandoned. From the 1980s they were restored and transformed into a leisure and cultural quarter, today Liverpool's most-visited place. The iron Doric columns, brick arches and old cranes have been retained around the water.

The warehouses house The Beatles Story museum, galleries and cultural spaces, restaurants, bars, cafés and shops. The Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum, which are also in the complex, are closed for refurbishment, with reopening expected in 2028. The waterfront ferris wheel and Mersey boat tours are just a few minutes away.

The waterfront walk from the Albert Dock to Pier Head, to the north, is a 10-minute riverside stroll, passing the Museum of Liverpool and the three Edwardian buildings known as the Three Graces. The area is part of the old waterfront that was a UNESCO World Heritage Site until 2021.
