About Cavern Club

The Cavern Club is a music venue in a basement on Mathew Street in central Liverpool, opened in 1957 as a jazz club. It soon began hosting rock bands from the city, and it was there that the Beatles played about 290 performances between 1961 and 1963, often at lunchtime. In November 1961 Brian Epstein saw a show at the Cavern and became the band's manager.

The original club closed in 1973 and was buried during construction work. In 1984 it was rebuilt a few metres away, using many of the original bricks, with the same brick-arched design, a stage at the back and a low ceiling. Today it has live music every day, with Beatles cover bands and other acts, and walls covered in signatures and photos.

Mathew Street, a narrow pedestrian street, has become a pilgrimage site for fans, with a statue of John Lennon leaning against the wall, the brick wall bearing the names of artists who played at the Cavern, and several pubs such as the Grapes, frequented by the band. The street is busy at night and on weekends.

During the day the club usually opens for visits, and at night there are shows with paid admission at some times. Check the schedule and the minimum age requirement for evening sessions.
