About Miradouro de Casal de Loivos
Casal de Loivos is a small village high on the north slope of the Douro, a few kilometres from Pinhão. The viewpoint, at the edge of the village, overlooks a large bend in the river.
From there you can see the terraced vineyards (socalcos) that descend to the water, the quintas with their white houses, and Pinhão down below at the confluence with the river that gives the village its name.
The view is considered one of the most representative of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The road up to the village climbs in tight bends through the vineyards, and the route itself already shows the work of building the socalcos, with slate walls raised by hand over generations.
