About Sé de Lamego
The Sé de Lamego, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, was founded in 1129, a few years before Portugal's independence. The original construction survives in the square bell tower, which has a Romanesque appearance.
The main façade, with three carved Gothic portals, dates from the early 16th century. The interior was heavily altered in the 18th century, with gilt carved altarpieces and paintings on the nave vaults.
The Renaissance cloister has regular arches and side chapels, and from it you get another view of the medieval tower, the oldest part of the complex.
The Sé has been a National Monument since 1910 and is located in the historic center, near the start of the Santuário staircase and the climb to the castle.
