About Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Devotion on the Monte de Santo Estêvão began in a 14th-century chapel. The present sanctuary was begun in 1750 and was only completed in 1905. The church has a Baroque and Rococo façade with two bell towers.
What makes the place well known is the staircase that descends from the sanctuary to the town center, in stretches of stone and lime interspersed with landings. Blue-and-white tile panels, fountains, obelisks and statues decorate the route.
One of the landings, the Pátio dos Reis, has statues of kings from the Old Testament around a fountain. From the top, you can see the town and the surrounding hills.
The complex, with its staircase and tree-lined park, has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1984. The festas of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, one of the largest pilgrimages in northern Portugal, usually culminate on September 8.
