About Ponte Fortificada de Ucanha

The Ponte de Ucanha crosses the Rio Varosa in the municipality of Tarouca, about 15 km from Lamego. At the entrance to the bridge rises a 15th-century stone tower, one of the few remaining examples of a fortified bridge in Portugal.

The tower was used to control passage and collect a toll, the tax levied on those entering the lands of the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Salzedas, which dominated the region.

The Mosteiro de Salzedas, of the Cistercian Order, is about 3 km away. It was founded in the 12th century and has a large church, a cloister and a small museum of sacred art.

Near the bridge are the Caves da Murganheira, carved into the granite, where sparkling wine is produced by the traditional method and which can be visited by reservation.
