About Castelo de Lamego

The Castelo de Lamego occupies the highest point of the old town, in a location settled since prehistoric times. The medieval fortress played an important role in the struggles between Christians and Muslims in the region.

What remains are the keep tower, sections of the inner and outer walls and a few gates. Over time, the houses of the castle neighborhood were built leaning against the walls.

One of the most curious parts is the cistern, a large underground water reservoir covered by stone vaults, which stored water for times of siege.

From the top of the tower you can see the town, the Santuário dos Remédios and the surrounding river valleys. The castle has been a National Monument since 1910.
