About Monte Palace Madeira

Monte Palace occupies the former estate of a late 19th-century hotel on the Monte. It now belongs to a foundation and operates as a garden and museum.

The hillside garden covers about 7 hectares with carp ponds, waterfalls, bridges and paths. It brings together plants from Madeira and several continents, such as cycads, tree ferns and azaleas.

Along the paths are Portuguese tile panels from several centuries, including a set that tells the history of Portugal, and an oriental garden with pagodas and lanterns.

The museum, in the main building, displays a collection of minerals and gemstones from around the world and contemporary sculptures from Zimbabwe.
