About Monte e carros de cesto

The Monte sits high above Funchal and was a summer retreat for the island's elite in the 19th century due to its cooler climate. It is reached by cable car from the Zona Velha, ascending over the city's rooftops.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, the island's patron, sits atop a stairway. There is the tomb of Carlos I, the last emperor of Austria, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922.

At the foot of the stairway the carros de cesto set off—wicker baskets on wooden runners that descend about 2 km along steep streets to Livramento, guided by two carreiros dressed in white with straw hats. The transport has existed since the 19th century.

Nearby are the Monte Palace Madeira and, a few minutes away, the cable car that links the Monte to the Jardim Botânico.
