About Mercado dos Lavradores

The Mercado dos Lavradores was inaugurated in 1940 in an Art Deco building designed by Edmundo Tavares. The entrance and the central courtyard have tile panels depicting sellers in traditional dress.

On the ground floor and in the gallery around the courtyard, the stalls sell tropical and subtropical fruits grown on the island, such as passion fruits of various species, annonas and bananas, as well as vegetables and flowers.

At the back is the fish market (lota), where black scabbardfish is sold—a deep-water, long, dark fish typical of Madeira—alongside tuna.

The market is between the center and the Zona Velha, and is often the starting point for walking tours of Funchal.
