About Jardim Botânico da Madeira

The Jardim Botânico da Madeira opened in 1960 in the former Quinta do Bom Sucesso, which belonged to the Reid family, associated with a well-known island hotel. It sits on a slope above Funchal, at about 300 metres altitude.

The garden gathers thousands of species, divided into areas: Laurissilva forest plants and Madeira endemics, cacti and succulents, tropical and useful plants such as coffee and sugarcane, and an arboretum.

The geometric beds, planted with colorful species, form the garden's best-known image, with the city and the sea in the background.

The garden also has a Louro Parque with birds and a small natural history museum in the old quinta house. A cable car links the garden to the Monte.
