About Sinagoga de Tomar

The Sinagoga de Tomar was built in the mid-15th century in the city's former Jewish quarter and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval synagogues in Portugal.

After the expulsion and forced conversion of the Jews at the end of the 15th century, the building had various uses, such as a prison, a hayloft and a warehouse. It was classified as a National Monument in 1921.

The hall is small and square, with vaults supported by four columns and walls with embedded clay pots that improved the acoustics.

Today it houses the Museu Luso-Hebraico Abraão Zacuto, with tombstones and objects related to the history of the Jews in Portugal. The name recalls the Jewish astronomer whose tables helped Portuguese navigators.
