About Universidade de Évora

The Universidade de Évora was founded in 1559 by Cardinal D. Henrique and handed over to the Jesuits at the Colégio do Espírito Santo. It was Portugal's second university, after Coimbra.

With the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, the university was closed. It only reopened in the 20th century, and today it operates in the same historic building.

The cloister, with two-storey arcades, stands at the center of the college. The surrounding classrooms have walls covered with 18th-century blue and white tiles, with themes related to the subject taught in each room.

Visits to the building are possible during public opening hours, always respecting classes.
