About Praça do Giraldo
Praça do Giraldo is the center of life in Évora. The name recalls Geraldo Sem Pavor, who conquered the city from the Moors in 1165.
In the middle of the square stands the Fonte Henriquina, a 1571 marble fountain with eight spouts, which are said to represent the streets that lead to the square. On the north side is the Igreja de Santo Antão, from the 16th century.
The arcades around the square house cafés, shops and terraces. The square was once the site of executions by the Inquisition, which had its seat in Évora.
Major central streets start from the square, such as Rua 5 de Outubro, which climbs toward the Sé and the Templo Romano. Cafés with tables under the arcades make the square a pleasant meeting place.
