About Capela dos Ossos
The Capela dos Ossos was built in the 17th century by Franciscan friars, next to the Igreja de São Francisco, a late 15th-century Gothic-Manueline church.
The chapel's walls and columns are lined with human bones and skulls taken from the city's cemeteries. The intention was to prompt visitors to reflect on the brevity of life.
At the entrance there is an inscription in Portuguese: Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos. The ceiling is painted with scenes about death.
The visit also includes the Igreja de São Francisco, with gilt woodwork and the main chapel, and a collection of sacred art and nativity scenes.
