About Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas, known by the acronym MACE, occupies the former Hospital da Misericórdia in the historic centre. The building was adapted to house the Coleção António Cachola, one of the main private collections of contemporary Portuguese art, loaned to the city.
The collection brings together painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation by Portuguese artists who emerged from the 1980s onward, and the works are shown in exhibitions that change over time. The contrast between the old building and the contemporary works is part of the visit.
The museum provides a different pause on an itinerary dominated by fortifications and helps show that Elvas is not only a garrison town. It is a few minutes’ walk from Praça da República.
Because the exhibitions rotate, it is worth checking in advance what is on display and confirming opening hours.
