About Forte de Santa Luzia

The Forte de Santa Luzia stands on a small rise south of Elvas, a few minutes' walk from the walls. It was built during the Restoration War, after 1640, when Portugal fought to break from Spain, and has the star shape—with bastions and a ditch—typical of fortifications of the period.

During the 1658 siege, commanded by the Spaniard Luís de Haro, the fort resisted the attacks and helped hold the city until the Battle of the Lines of Elvas in January 1659, won by the Portuguese. For this reason it gained a reputation as a bastion of the border defenses.

Today the fort houses a section of the military museum, with rooms on the history of Elvas’s fortifications, weaponry and soldiers’ life. You can walk along the bastions and the ditch and see up close how the walls were designed to cross fire.

The fort has been a National Monument since 1940 and is part of the World Heritage ensemble. From the top the view opens over the city walls and, to the north, toward Monte da Graça and the other fort.
