About Igreja de Santo António
The Igreja de Santo António was built in the early 18th century and restored after the 1755 earthquake. From the outside the façade is simple; inside, almost all surfaces are covered in gilded woodwork.
Angels, bunches of grapes, animals and carved wooden figures gilded in gold decorate the altar and the walls, together with panels of azulejos and paintings about the life of Santo António.
The church was linked to the Lagos military regiment, and Santo António was regarded as the regiment's patron.
Visits are made via the Museu Municipal Dr. José Formosinho next door, which houses collections of archaeology, ethnography and sacred art from the region.
