About Fortaleza de Sagres
The Fortaleza de Sagres occupies the Ponta de Sagres, a flat promontory surrounded by cliffs at the southwest tip of Portugal. Tradition links the site to Infante D. Henrique, who lived in the region in the 15th century.
The current fortress is mainly 18th century, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Inside are the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça and a large compass rose traced in stone on the ground, about 43 metres in diameter, whose origin is still debated.
A circular path runs along the cliff edge, with views of the open sea and Cabo de São Vicente.
About 6 km away is Cabo de São Vicente, the southwesternmost point of continental Europe, with a lighthouse that is one of the most powerful in Europe. The ancients considered it the end of the known world.
