About Museu Municipal de Faro
The Museu Municipal de Faro occupies the former Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, founded in the 16th century by Queen D. Leonor for Poor Clare nuns. The two-storey Renaissance cloister is one of the most beautiful in the Algarve.
The best‑known piece in the collection is the mosaic of the god Oceanus, a large Roman mosaic found in Faro that decorated a building in the ancient Ossónoba, the city's Roman name.
The collection also includes Roman and Muslim archaeological finds, painting and sacred art.
The museum is on Praça Afonso III, inside the Cidade Velha, near the Sé. The convent was also a cork factory in the 19th century before being restored to house the museum.
