About Igreja do Carmo e Capela dos Ossos
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built in the 18th century by the Ordem Terceira do Carmo, outside the Cidade Velha walls. The Baroque façade, with two bell towers, opens onto Largo do Carmo.
The interior is covered in gilded woodwork, with decorated altars and retables. The sacristy houses sacred art.
Behind the church, in a small courtyard, is the Capela dos Ossos, built in 1816. The walls and ceiling are covered with bones and skulls of Carmelite friars, removed from the order's cemetery as a reminder of the brevity of life.
The chapel is small and the visit is brief, but it is one of Faro's most sought-after sights.
