About Cidade Velha de Faro
The Cidade Velha, also called Vila-Adentro, is the oldest part of Faro, inside walls that have a Roman base and were reinforced during the Muslim period and after the Christian conquest in 1249.
The most used entrance is the Arco da Vila, a neoclassical portal completed in 1812 at the initiative of Bishop D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar, with a design by the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri. On top of the arch is a statue of São Tomás de Aquino and, almost always, stork nests.
Inside the walls, the cobbled streets lead to Largo da Sé, lined with orange trees, with the cathedral, the Paço Episcopal and the Câmara Municipal. The Museu Municipal occupies the former Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, from the 16th century.
On the other side of the walls, the Ria Formosa waterfront has a promenade with views over the marshes and the islands.
