The city

What to expect from Sirmione.

Sirmione occupies a narrow peninsula of about 4 km that juts into the southern shore of Lake Garda. The entrance to the historic center is through the Castello Scaligero, a water-surrounded fortress with a fortified harbor. At the tip of the peninsula are the Grotte di Catullo, the ruins of the largest Roman villa in northern Italy, and on the highest point the small church of San Pietro in Mavino, with 14th-century frescoes.
