About Torre Apponale
The Torre Apponale was built in the 13th century to oversee Riva's harbour and town centre. The name comes from the old road that linked the Ponale area to Monte Brione and passed there. The tower controlled the western harbour, the town's most important port.
It is 34 metres high and was raised around 1555. At the top stands the Anzolim de la Tor, a weather-vane in the shape of an angel that became the town's symbol. There is also a clock on the façade facing the square.
The tower is on the east side of Piazza III Novembre, Riva's main square, open to the old harbour. Around it, the Palazzo Pretorio and the Palazzo Comunale with their arcades reflect the era when the town was governed by the bishops of Trento and later by the Austrians. An internal staircase leads to the top, from where you can see the lake between the mountains.
