About Chiesa dell'Inviolata
Chiesa dell'Inviolata was built between 1603 and 1636 at the initiative of Gian Angelo Gaudenzio Madruzzo, governor of Riva and Arco, and his wife Alfonsina Gonzaga. The aim was to provide a worthy home for an image of the Virgin that was the object of popular devotion and that still stands on the high altar.
On the outside, the church has an octagonal plan and a bell tower, in a square that lay outside the old town. It is regarded as Riva's most important architectural work.
The interior contrasts with the simple façade: the walls and the dome are covered with gilded stuccoes, moldings and paintings, in a Baroque ensemble that celebrates the Virgin during the years of the Counter-Reformation. Next to it a convent was built for the religious who cared for the sanctuary.
