About Cascata del Varone
Cascata del Varone is located in the municipality of Tenno, about 3 km from Riva. The waterfall is nearly 100 metres tall and is formed by the Magnone river, fed by underground waters from Lake Tenno that run through the mountain before plunging into the gorge.
The walkway that leads into the gorge was opened in 1874. Since then the waterfall has welcomed visitors such as Emperor Franz Joseph, Franz Kafka and Thomas Mann, who spent seasons in Riva in the early 20th century.
The visit has two parts: the lower grotto, where the water falls forcefully into a narrow pool between rock walls, and the upper grotto, from which you can see the fall from above. The surrounding park has a planted garden and a signposted path. The noise and humidity inside the gorge are part of the experience.
