About Bastione di Riva del Garda
The Bastione is a circular bastion of thick blocks of white limestone, built by the Republic of Venice from 1508 on the slope of Monte Rocchetta above the town. The idea was to protect Riva from attacks coming from the north, from the principality of the bishops of Trento.
Venetian rule in the area ended shortly afterwards, and the fortress was never used for the purpose it was built. In 1703, during the invasion of Trentino, the French blew up part of it. What remained was restored from the early years of the 21st century.
Today the Bastione is a viewpoint. From its elevated position you can see the centre of Riva, the harbour, Monte Brione and the whole northern part of the lake, including Torbole and the Malcesine shore.
