About Museo Archeologico di Olbia
The Museo Archeologico di Olbia is on the islet of Peddone, a short walk from the old port. The building is shaped like an anchored ship, with round windows and walkways, to recall the port's role in the city's history. The name Olbia comes from Greek and means happy.
The exhibition covers prehistory and the Phoenician, Greek, Punic and Roman phases, continuing through the Middle Ages and the modern period. The Carthaginians surrounded the city with walls, and the Romans made it the main center of the island's east coast, with paved streets, baths, a forum and an aqueduct.
The highlight is the remains of Roman ships found in excavations of the old port from 1999 onward, some of them sunk during a Vandal attack. It is one of the largest collections of ancient ships in Italy.
The museum also preserves a hoard of gold coins discovered in the city's excavations.
