About Basilica di San Simplicio
The Basilica di San Simplicio is the oldest and most important religious monument in the northeast of Sardenha. Built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries in the Romanesque style, it is made mainly of local granite, with brick in later additions. It was a cathedral until 1839 and received the title of minor basilica in 1993.
It is dedicated to Saint Simplicius, considered the first bishop of the town and a martyr in the time of Emperor Diocletian. Today he is the patron of the diocese and of Olbia.
The church occupies a small hill that lay outside the walls and served as a cemetery since Roman times. Archaeological studies have identified five construction phases, with the extension of the nave and the current façade, featuring a trifora window, in the latter phases. At the foot of the altar there is a space with finds from the Punic‑Roman and Christian necropolis.
In mid‑May, the feast of San Simplicio includes a procession, a traditional costume parade and horse races.
